Fatigue & Burnout
Chronic fatigue and burnout are more than just feeling tired after a long day. They’re deep, persistent states of exhaustion that affect your entire being—physically, mentally, and emotionally. When you’re stuck in this cycle, it can feel like no amount of rest is ever enough.
What Is Burnout?
Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress. It often stems from work, caregiving, or other responsibilities that leave little room for rest or recovery. Left untreated, burnout can lead to more serious health concerns, including chronic fatigue, chronic pain, or mental health disorders like anxiety and depression. Symptoms of burnout can include:
Emotional numbness or detachment
Increased irritability or frustration
Feeling ineffective or unaccomplished
Physical symptoms, such as headaches or digestive issues
Withdrawal from relationships or activities
Burnout doesn’t just affect those in high-pressure jobs—it can happen to anyone who feels overwhelmed by the demands of life.
What Is Chronic Fatigue?
Chronic fatigue often develops after prolonged periods of stress, anxiety, or other life challenges that leave your body and mind depleted. It goes beyond physical tiredness and creates a persistent sense of exhaustion that seeps into every part of your life, making it difficult to function or feel fully present. For many, chronic fatigue is accompanied by symptoms like:
Constant exhaustion, even after rest
Difficulty concentrating or “brain fog”
Persistent worry or overwhelm
Sleep disturbances, such as insomnia or oversleeping
Physical aches and pains with no clear cause
Loss of motivation or interest in activities
Compassion Fatigue: The cost of caring
Compassion fatigue is a specific form of burnout often experienced by caregivers, healthcare workers, therapists, or anyone who provides emotional support to others. When you’re constantly tending to others’ needs, it can leave you feeling drained, disconnected, and unable to provide care for yourself. Symptoms of compassion fatigue often mirror those of burnout and chronic fatigue, but they can also include:
A diminished sense of empathy or compassion
Increased cynicism or detachment from others’ suffering
Feelings of guilt or shame for not being able to "do more"
